Clinch was born in Louisiana in 1832, the seventh of eight children.〔(Twilight on the South Carolina Rice Fields: Letters of the Heyward Family )〕〔(A History and Genealogy of the Families of Bayard, Houstoun of Georgia )〕 His father was Brevet General Duncan Lamont Clinch, Sr., a veteran of the War of 1812, Indian fighter, planter, and public servant.〔(A Brief History of Captain N.B.
