Clinch was born in Louisiana in 1832, the seventh of eight children.〔(Twilight on the South Carolina Rice Fields: Letters of the Heyward Family )〕〔(A History and Genealogy of the Families of Bayard, Houstoun of Georgia )〕 His father was Brevet General Duncan Lamont Clinch, Sr., a veteran of the War of 1812, Indian fighter, planter, and public servant.〔(A Brief History of Captain N.B. Clinch’s Artillery Company )〕 His mother was Eliza Bayard McIntosh of Camden County, Georgia, Clinch’s second wife.〔(Biographical writings about General Clinch. 1849-1900s )〕 His older brother was Duncan L.
